As we move into the second quarter, conversations with customers and industry peers reflect what we are seeing at Peoria Production Solutions (PPS): the contract packaging sector remains strong, steady, and resilient. In fact, demand across food and beverage, healthcare, and consumer goods continues to grow at double-digit rates in contract packaging.
Yet rapid changes are underway that we need to navigate carefully and thoughtfully. From my perspective, there are three forces that are shaping the future of our industry:
- Strategic business planning
- AI and technology
- Biodegradable materials and sustainability
Growth Through Strategic Planning
We are seeing a strategic reset across the industry, with companies reassessing long-term plans, capital structure, and competitive positioning. For example, some privately held, smaller packaging firms are entering leadership transitions as owners approach retirement.
The broader shift is toward preparedness, with companies strengthening operations, expanding capabilities, and pursuing thoughtful partnerships rather than trying to do it all alone.
Financially sound organizations are using this timing to grow. My conversations at this year’s Pack Expo East and the Contract Packaging Association’s annual meeting reinforced that the focus remains on long-term positioning and sustainable growth.
AI and Automation are Changing the Game
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning are no longer emerging technologies in fulfillment and contract packaging; they are becoming foundational tools. We are seeing AI help teams improve demand forecasting accuracy, reduce inventory risk, optimize routing and logistics, and enhance workflow visibility across production environments. This directly impacts cost control, turnaround time, and customer satisfaction.
As a non-profit, we are proud of our employees and of the powerful tools we provide to help them be their best. AI is reshaping how companies interact with their customers.
Our goal is better quality, higher efficiency, and stronger service, all guided by our mission. AI can be an accelerator for operational excellence to make good teams better, not replace them.
Biodegradability and Sustainability That Works
The shift toward biodegradable and environmentally responsible packaging continues to accelerate. We see this showing up in:
- Expectations from customers
- Priorities for retailers
- Monitoring by regulators
I have always believed that sustainability is most effective when implemented operationally rather than treated as a separate activity.
Biodegradable materials, recyclable substrates, clear labeling, and waste-reduction initiatives must align to consider the ‘cradle to grave’ in packaging. And now, there is more innovation than ever across the industry. Contract packagers play a critical role in translating sustainability goals into practical production and environmental solutions.
Leading Through the Next Cycle
The companies that lead over the next five years will be those that plan strategically, adopt technology intelligently, and deliver sustainable solutions that work at scale. At Peoria Production Solutions, we are building for what comes next.
